Global Literature - Short Stories from Around the World

In this course, we will study a diverse and exciting mix of literary texts from various regions and traditions around the world. This course tries to tackle the big questions: can literature help us live our lives better?

Can reading make us better human beings? We will study two short stories every week. The selected stories are some of the best short stories from the Russian, American, African and South Asian literary traditions. We will analyse the themes and ideas raised in these stories and connect them with our lives, our society and the problems we face both as individuals and as members of communities. Through lively discussions, the course also teaches ways of reading literature, exploring how character, plot and themes can be interpreted to understand the deeper meaning of a text. Towards the end of the course, students will write a short piece of creative fiction/nonfiction. In this component, students will be able to apply what they have learnt about the formal elements of creative writing in class to craft a short story/essay.

  • Develop a strong writing voice and learn to write about your own experiences.
  • Learn about the formal elements of literature such as voice, character, plot, style and perspective through close reading.
  • Learn about critical themes in the humanities such as colonialism, social inequality, gender, feminism and class.
  • Improve your grasp of the English language.
  • Read and learn from a variety of the best short stories from world literature.

Course Fee: PKR 20,000/-

Note: CES may cancel or postpone a course due to insufficient enrolment or unforeseen circumstances. In this case, the university will refund registration/processing fee (if any) but will not be responsible for any other related charges/expenses including cancellation/change charges by airline and travel agencies.

Participants must register online through CES website by clicking on their desired course and filling out a one-page form. Before starting the registration process, please ensure that you have a formal scanned picture (for CES smart card) and CNIC details. Incorrect information provided during the registration process will lead towards cancellation of your enrolment at any stage and participants will not be entitled to claim a refund.

Once you have completed your online registration for your desired course, you may proceed to payment section. You have the option to pay online using your bank debit/credit cards through LUMS online payment system??https://pay.lums.edu.pk??OR by downloading the fee vouchers and depositing cash in any branch of designated banks specified on the fee voucher. Once you make your payment, you will receive a confirmation email within 24 to 48 working hours and your payment status will be updated to "PAID" in the online application portal.
