Course Overview:

Beginning Urdu is a 10-week course designed for learners without any previous knowledge of Urdu language and culture. The goal of this course is to provide students with the fundamentals of Urdu grammar and help you move from novice low to novice high levels in all four skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) using a curriculum designed by instructors experienced in teaching to foreign students. Using a communicative approach and an innovative blended curriculum, this course will be conducted online. The primary medium of instruction is English.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course students will be able to:

  • Read and write in the Urdu script with minimal errors.

  • Accurately recognize and pronounce all Urdu sound

  • Develop basic listening and speaking abilities in Urdu.

  • Learn about culturally, historically, and geographically significant cities and places.

  • Gain familiarity with several aspects of Pakistani culture such as festivals, food, clothes, and popular and folk culture.

  • Read and write in Urdu at satisfactory speed with adequate accuracy for survival level competency.

  • Make basic inquiries and negotiate practical problems (e.g. shopping, asking/giving directions, telling time).

  • Participate in basic social interactions (e.g. conversation about home, family, work, school, and daily life and essentials).

Instructor

Dr. Faiza Saleem
Faiza Saleem is an Associate Instructor and Pedagogy Development Associate for Urdu at MGHSS, LUMS. She has an extensive and diverse experience of teaching Urdu as a foreign language at graduate and post graduate levels. Faiza has taught on the Berkeley Urdu Language Program in Pakistan since 2014-2019, at the University of Virginia, and also at the University of Wisconsin-Madison's South Asia Summer Language Institute. Faiza completed her PhD in Linguistics in 2019. Her research interests include; language pedagogy, language and gender socialization, and early childhood gender socialization in primary schools. She was awarded the Fulbright FLTA scholarship for the year 2013-14 as well as the Berkeley Urdu Teaching Training Fellowship, University of Texas at Austin in 2017. Faiza loves sharing not just the Urdu language but also South Asian culture with students, and above all works to make learning fun!

Participants must register online through the CES website by clicking on their desired course and filling out a one-page form. Before starting the registration process, please ensure that you have the following:

- A passport-sized photograph for the CES smartcard. It should be against a white background.

- Correct CNIC details.

Incorrect information provided during the registration process will lead towards cancellation of your enrolment at any stage, and participants will not be entitled to claim a refund.

Once you have completed your online registration, you may proceed to the payment section. You have two options:

1. Pay online using your bank debit/credit cards through LUMS online payment system https://pay.lums.edu.pk

2. Download the fee voucher and deposit cash in any branch of the designated banks specified on the fee voucher.

Once the payment has been made, you will receive a confirmation email within 24 to 48 working hours, and your payment status will be updated to "ENROLLED" in the online application portal.

Installment:

KalPay Taleem offers an instalment facility for participants enrolled in CES on-campus courses and workshops. If you want this option, please email taleem@kalpayfinancials.comor call at 0328 3044414 for more information.

Note: CES may cancel or postpone a course due to insufficient enrolment or unforeseen circumstances. In this case, the university will refund registration/processing fee (if any) but will not be responsible for any other related charges/expenses including cancellation/change charges by airline and travel agencies.
