Course Overview:

This course provides an introduction to the rapidly evolving world of financial technology (fintech) through a combination of theory, real-world applications, and global case studies. Over 12 sessions, participants will explore how fintech is reshaping payments, banking, lending, insurance, investing, and financial inclusion across both developed and emerging markets.

Each session combines conceptual frameworks with a live case study of a leading fintech startup (e.g., Stripe, Wise, Nubank, Lemonade, M-Pesa). Students will engage in discussions, debates, and simulations designed to critically analyse business models, regulatory challenges, and the social impact of fintech innovation.

The course is designed for business and policy students, professionals, and entrepreneurs who seek a strategic understanding of fintech trends and the opportunities they present.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the Fintech Ecosystem - Explain key verticals and how technology, regulation, and consumer behavior shape innovation.

  • Analyze Business Models - Evaluate how fintech startups create value, scale, and compare with traditional finance.

  • Assess Regulation & Risk - Identify major regulatory frameworks and assess risks around stability, ethics, and consumer protection.

  • Apply Case-Based Insights - Draw lessons from 12 global case studies across diverse markets to evaluate strategy and inclusion.

  • Engage in Strategic Problem-Solving - Use debates, role plays, and simulations to develop practical fintech strategies.

  • Anticipate the Future of Finance - Understand how AI, blockchain, embedded finance, and CBDCs will shape the next wave of innovation.

Course: Introduction to Business

The overall experience that I’ve had with this course is just amazing. It’s like a micro MBA that LUMS can have you do in less than two months. It’s a very rigorous course, it’s time-consuming and very hands-on and is a learning experience that everyone should experience at least once in their lives.
