Overview:

This 12-session intensive course provides a comprehensive journey through Islamic banking and finance, starting with an introduction to the industry's history, key infrastructure entities, the global halal economy, and Shariah governance and audit frameworks.

This course provides an overview of the key elements of Islamic finance, tailored for individuals with little to no knowledge of this field.

The next four classes provide a deep dive into core contracts Musharakah, Mudarabah, Ijarah, Salam, and Istisna. We will examine the structure of each contract, potential Shariah pitfalls, risk management techniques, and modern product applications.

Following this, participants explore Islamic capital markets, including Shariah-compliant equities, Sukuks (with a focus on green and hybrid models), and compliant hedging instruments.

A dedicated session on Takaful will provide an overview of how various Takaful models operate.

In the last lecture, the trainer, drawing on his experience, will share his insights on the Islamic finance industry's future direction and key trends to watch out for.

The last class will be a presentation-based assessment where participants will need to structure an Islamic financial product based on what they have learned and provide a brief overview of its application.

Please note: This is for people with no or limited knowledge about Islamic banking and finance.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Describe the evolution and current landscape of Islamic banking, finance infrastructure, and the global halal economy

  • Explain governance, Shariah-audit frameworks, and the roles of key Islamic-finance bodies

  • Analyze, structure, and manage risk in core Islamic finance contracts (Musharakah, Mudarabah, Ijarah, Salam, Istisna)

  • Compare modern applications of each contract to conventional products and identify Shariah-compliance issues

  • Design and evaluate Shariah-compliant capital markets instruments, including Sukuk, equities, and hedging solutions

  • Illustrate the principles and operational models of Takaful (Islamic insurance)

  • Anticipate future trends in Islamic finance and propose innovative product ideas

  • Apply course concepts by structuring, presenting, and defending a novel Islamic financial product
