Overview:
In this
course, we will explore the elements that form such compelling pieces of short fiction:
from plotting emotional and narrative arcs to exploring the use of vivid imagery;
from creating distinct character and authorial voices to employing the economy of
words in your own favour. Together, the group will dive into the selected writings
of a wide range of writers, including Edgar Allan Poe, Gabriel Garcia Marquez,
Daniyal Mueenuddin, Jhumpa Lahiri, Shirley Jackson, Raymond Carver, Jorge Luis
Borges, Jamil Jan Kochai, Mahreen Sohail, Mariana Enriquez and others. Piece by
piece we will pick apart their sentences, their structures, and put them back
together to see how they accomplish their resounding, lasting success.
The
Art of Short Fiction is designed on a Read/Write format, with special attention
paid to submissions for creative anthologies and literary journals. Throughout the
course the instructor will share best practices for submissions and other relevant
details for those aspiring to join the literary and publishing sectors.
This course is designed for all those who are interested in the craft of short fiction, whether they wish to write short fiction or simply elevate their understanding of the form. Short fiction is a disciplined, exact form that can be the springboard to a writing practice???all those struggling to jumpstart their creative writing are welcome to join.

Application Process:
Participants must register online through the CES website by clicking on their desired course and filling out a one-page form. Before starting the registration process, please ensure that you have the following:
- A passport-sized photograph for the CES smartcard. It should be against a white background.
- Correct CNIC details.
Incorrect information provided during the registration process will lead towards cancellation of your enrolment at any stage, and participants will not be entitled to claim a refund.
Once you have completed your online registration, you may proceed to the payment section. You have two options:
1. Pay online using your bank debit/credit cards through LUMS online payment system https://pay.lums.edu.pk
2. Download the fee voucher and deposit cash in any branch of the designated banks specified on the fee voucher.
Once the payment has been made, you will receive a confirmation email within 24 to 48 working hours, and your payment status will be updated to "ENROLLED" in the online application portal.

Note: CES may cancel or postpone a course due to insufficient enrolment or unforeseen circumstances. In this case, the university will refund registration/processing fee (if any) but will not be responsible for any other related charges/expenses including cancellation/change charges by airline and travel agencies.
