Course Overview:

The course is designed to give a broad understanding of data science to anyone interested in the field. There is a focus on both depth and breadth of the curriculum where participants will be exposed to a wide variety of tools and techniques commonly used in data science and visualisations. The course will start with Excel to bring everybody up to speed with basic concepts (Excel will be taught from scratch). Other tools covered in the course include Power BI, Tableau, Python, R-Studio, SQL and Flourish. Participants will progress from basic data visualisations, to creating dashboards, forecasting using regression, and will be introduced to machine learning towards the course. Course is designed from a practical perspective, and the aim is to equip participants with the skills that they can directly implement in their professional life and will also enable them to start freelance/consulting services if they want. All lectures will be based on real life case studies and data sets ranging from economics, finance, movies, social sciences, social media etc. There is a significant focus on data cleaning and structuring to prepare participants for real life scenarios. Various sessions will also demonstrate how coding can be done using ChatGPT with right prompts.

Learning Outcomes:

• Gain strong working proficiency in Excel for data cleaning, analysis, automation, and visualization

• Build dashboards and transform data using Power BI and Tableau, with introductory experience in Python, R, SQL, and other analytical tools

• Understand and apply key statistical concepts including percentiles, correlation, and linear/multiple regression with interpretation of results

• Identify appropriate visualisation methods tailored to data type and communication goals

• Develop skills in data preparation and structuring to handle real-world messy datasets from multiple sources

• Recognise analytical biases and model limitations that may lead to incorrect insights or conclusions

• Gain introductory understanding of machine learning models such as decision trees, clustering, and neural networks

Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Finance, Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS)

Shakir is a CFA and CAIA charterholder and currently works as an Associate at Amaana Capital, a US-based venture capital firm investing across Pakistan, Middle East, and Southeast Asia. Previously, he worked as a Data Analyst at KalPay Financials and as an Entrepreneur in Residence at Jiye Technologies. Earlier in his career, he was part of a research team at the LUMS Biology Department, where he helped develop a disease-progression model for COVID-19 patients.

Application Process:

Participants must register online through the CES website by clicking on their desired course and filling out a one-page form. Before starting the registration process, please ensure that you have the following:

- A passport-sized photograph for the CES smartcard. It should be against a white background.

- Correct CNIC details.

Incorrect information provided during the registration process will lead towards cancellation of your enrolment at any stage, and participants will not be entitled to claim a refund.

Once you have completed your online registration, you may proceed to the payment section. You have two options:

1. Pay online using your bank debit/credit cards through LUMS online payment system??https://pay.lums.edu.pk

2. Download the fee voucher and deposit cash in any branch of the designated banks specified on the fee voucher.

Once the payment has been made, you will receive a confirmation email within 24 to 48 working hours, and your payment status will be updated to "ENROLLED" in the online application portal.

Note: CES may cancel or postpone a course due to insufficient enrolment or unforeseen circumstances.
